Studies in Empathy: Beginnings

September 24, 2016

It’s a hard time to be human. If paying attention is the first rule for an artist, it’s a painful rule to follow right now. I feel like I’ve been standing still for a long time. I’ve watched and listened and asked questions, but I haven’t been moving. As a dance artist, that feels like a problem, but it’s one I don’t necessarily feel the need to dwell on right now. Last night, I had an impulse to move; to allow the body’s capacity for empathy to help me process what I’m thinking and feeling.

Let’s hear it for this little bottle of magic, which helped Brecken go down for a nap two hours earlier than usual, without any resistance, so he can be awake and rested to go to @ericwbush’s honor band concert this afternoon. Consistency, trust, and a happy and rested baby and mama. That’s what these oils have done for us.
Just a reminder, my class on sleep and oils is tonight at 8:30 EST/7:30CST on Facebook. Come hang out if you’re curious about using oils to help you get the rest you want and need! ❤️
This particular moment is brought to you by “Baby Shark” and exploring focus modes and focus points in my Shoot Along course.
This morning was not off to a great start. We were struggling with communication (or lack thereof) and what has become the familiar challenge of processing so much at once. And while it sounds so weird, I’ve started almost looking forward to days like this, because they’re such great opportunities for both of us to learn and grow. For B, it’s about deepening his understanding of how the world works, and how he operates within it. For me, it’s about learning how to support that process, especially when it’s upsetting or disorienting for him. I decided to try and be present with him as he worked through his frustration, dropped our emotional support oils in the diffuser, and decided I wouldn’t let the struggle define our entire day; that it would just be a part of the many things that were possible.
Within twenty minutes, we were back to open play, dancing to favorite songs, and debating the merits of cheddar vs. graham bunnies. I don’t always get it right. Sometimes the ways I try to support him totally backfire, until nap time arrives like a sweet sanctuary for both of us. But some days turn into dance parties.
Parenting is really about becoming. For him, and for me.
Shoot Along Week 3. Today was an ordinary day, and not one when I typically would have reached for my DSLR. This is exactly why I wanted to do this course. I’m so looking forward to the next 49 weeks! #shootalong #creativemotherhood #adventuresintoddlerhood #lifewithbrecken
Shoot Along Week 2. ❤️ Swipe for some #bandlittle love. #shootalong
My people. ❤️ Waited to share this because it was part of a gift for someone.

My parents got me a subscription to @shootalongphoto for Christmas. It’s a 52-week course in photography for parents, with lessons and creative prompts emailed every week. I’m hoping it will keep me more accountable for capturing more of our everyday using my DSLR. Here’s one of my images for Week 1: Aperture.

This year was intense. And wonderful. So much change. So much joy. #topnine2018 #happynewyear
Merry merry ❤️
Santa’s elves are heading to bed. Merry Christmas dear friends! 🎄
