Taking Ground: Dancers in Company Home Concert 2019

“The University of Iowa’s premiere touring ensemble, Dancers in Company, presents their hugely popular home concert. Now in its 35th year, the company presents works exploring this year’s theme of “taking ground.” Curated by company directors Jessica Anthony and Alex Bush, the diverse repertory engages with current and historical social and political movements that bring marginalized voices forward as well as abstract and aesthetic investigations of equity and space. UI Dance students will perform a thrilling  concert and use workshops and public discussions to facilitate community conversations throughout Iowa. Don’t miss the only UI home performances from this company of talented and exciting dancers and choreographers.”

This concert will include the premiere of Borrowed Earth, a new work by Alex Bush.

Steel Valley Rhythms

Dance Artist Michele Dunleavy’s ongoing research project, including a video design collaboration with Alex Bush:

“Steel Valley Rhythms (SVR) is an ongoing project that uses sound and movement to explore Western Pennsylvania's deep connections to the iron and steel industries. Inspired by visits to the Carrie Blast Furnaces, SVR combines percussive dance, music, projected images, video, and recorded oral histories allowing audience members to draw connections between past and present, while challenging perceived boundaries between labor and art. This project is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.”
